| In 1981 David Melville, a long time resident, opened the
Rum Cay Dive Club. This not only provided tourists a wonderful
base for diving on some of the most beautiful reefs in the Caribbean,
but also provided employment to the local citizens of Port Nelson.
It was because of his personal investment in the lives of the locals
that they first received gas refrigerators, stoves, and electricity.
Hurricane Lily destroyed the Club, and it is now being developed into a new resort. One of David's major contributions to the culture of Rum Cay has been the Rum Cay Herald. Not only does it provide local news coverage and updates on the lives and loves of the local citizens, it is filled with his own witty insight and editorials, contributing to the morale and morals of the locals. As a historical document, it is riveting reading, and other then Delores Wilson's "Rum Cay, My Home" the only contemporary written history of the island. I hope to have permission from Mr. Melville to reproduce in it's entirety all of the past issues of the Herald. Until then, this is all I have to date. |
